Valknut

Meaning

The valknut (Old Norse-inspired name meaning roughly “knot of those fallen in battle”) is a motif of three interlocking triangles found on Germanic Migration Period and Viking Age picture stones and artifacts. It often appears near scenes associated with Odin, death, and the transition of warriors—hence modern associations with fate, courage, and the afterlife of the slain.

Scholars debate precise ancient meaning; the neat “Odin’s symbol” label is partly reconstructive. Still, the archaeological clustering with funerary and martial imagery is real, and contemporary Heathen and Norse-inspired communities treat the valknut as a serious sacred or heritage mark. That seriousness also means it has been misused by some extremist groups; context and intent matter when displaying it publicly.
