Frequently asked questions

What is the bullet point symbol?+

The standard bullet point symbol is • (Unicode U+2022). Copy it from the grid above for lists in bios, chats, and documents that do not auto-format bullets. See the Bullet Point guide for Alt codes and alternatives.

How do I type a bullet point • in text?+

Copy the bullet • from the grid above and paste it wherever you need a list marker. On Windows you can also use Alt+0149. This is useful in places that don't offer automatic bullet lists, like social bios, chats, and plain-text notes.

What is the difference between an en dash – and an em dash —?+

The en dash – is shorter and used for ranges like 2020–2024. The em dash — is longer and used to break a sentence or add emphasis. Neither is a plain hyphen (-), which is shorter still and used to join words.

Should I use … or three periods for an ellipsis?+

The single ellipsis character … keeps the dots evenly spaced and prevents awkward line breaks, so it looks cleaner than typing three separate periods. Copy it above for polished writing.

Which bullet should I use for sub-lists?+

Use • for top-level items and ◦ or ⁃ for nested lines. Keep the same symbol on every line at the same level so the list looks intentional.
